Mariana was the first village in Minas Gerais.
Later on was declared a town and upon being elevated
to the status of city and then capital of Minas
Gerais.
Although its simplicity it is one of the most important
city of the gold circuit.
The city has a rich architecture projected in
baroque style. It is considered one of the most
beautiful in Brazil and it has also work of arts
made by Antonio Francisco Lisboa – “Aleijadinho”.
Mariana make the tourist to know the history
of Minas Gerais. The painter Manuel da Costa
Athayde and the poets Claudio Manoel da Costa,
Frei Santa Rita Durão are the distingueshed
sons from this city.
